Domain name can also go with a country extension, like "uk" for United Kingdom, "jp" for Japan, and so on. Besides, there are domain names meant only for specific use.

So, currently only .com, .org and .net are the most recognizable and commonly used extensions, though they are not the only ones. Country-specific extensions usually work as well as the above-mentioned ones.
